In gooseberry, with its high vitamin C content, is considered valuable in diabetes. A tablespoonful of its juice, mixed with a cup of fresh bitter gourd juice, taken daily for two months will stimulate the islets of Lengerhans i.e., the isolated group of cells that the secrete hormone insulin. It thus reduces the blood sugar in diabetes. Diet restrictions should be strictly observed while taking this medicine. It will also prevent eye complications in diabetes.

Equal quantity of amla powder, jamun powder and bitter-gourd powder also make a very useful food remedy for diabetics. A teaspoonful of this mixture once or twice a day would be effective in checking the progress of the disease.

The jambul fruit is regarded in traditional medicine as a specific against diabetes because of its effect on the pancreas. The fruit as such, the seeds and fruit juice are all useful in the treatment of this disease. The seeds contain a glucose Jamboline which is believed to have the power to check the pathological conversion of starch into sugar in cases of increased productions of glucose. They are dried and powdered. This powder in doses of three grams should be given three or four times a day mixed in water. It reduces the quantity of sugar in urine and allays the unquenchable thirst.

In Ayurveda. the inner bark of the jambul tree is also used in the treatment of diabetes. The bark is dried and burnt, which produces an ash of white Colour. This ash should be pestled in the mortar. strained and bottled. The diabetic patient should be given 65mg of this ash on an empty stomach with water in the morning and 135mg. Each time in the afternoon and in the evening an hour after meals, if the specific gravity of the urine is 1.02 to 1.03. If the specific gravity ranges between 1.035 and 1.055, the ash should be given thrice daily in the quantity of about 2gm at a time.

The tender leaves of the mango tree are considered useful in diabetes. An infusion is prepared from fresh leaves by soaking them overnight in water and squeezing them well in water before filtering it in the morning. This infused water should be taken every morning to control early diabetes. As an alternative to infusion. Leaves can be dried in the shade, powdered and preserved. Half a teaspoonful of this powder should be taken twice a day in the morning, and evening.

The bitter gourd is specifically used as a folk medicine for diabetes. Recent researches by a team of British doctors have established that it contain a hypoglycaemic or insulin-like principle, designated as plant-insulin, which has been found highly beneficial in lowering the blood and urine sugar levels. It should therefore be included liberally in the diet of the diabetic. For better results, the diabetic should take the juice of about four or five fruits every morning on an empty stomach. The seeds of bitter gourd can be added to food in the powdered form. Diabetic can also use bitter gourd in the form of decoction by boiling the pieces in water or in the form of dry powder.

A majority of diabetic usually suffer from malnutritions as they are usually under-nourished. Bitter goured being rich in all the essential vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin A, B1, B2, C and Iron, its regular use prevent many complications such as hypertension, eye complications, neuritis and defective metabolism of carbohydrates. It increases body's resistance against infection.

Fenugreek seeds have been found highly effective in the treatment of diabetes. According to a recent report brought out by the Indian Council of Medical Research, as quoted by press Trust of India on January 6, 1988, fenugreek seeds when given in varying doses of 25 grams to 100 grams daily, iminish reactive hyperglycaemia in diabetic patients. Levels of glucose, serum cholesterol and tryglycerides were also significantly reduced in the diabetes patients when the seeds were consumed. Quoting researchers at the National Institute of Nutritions, Hyderabad, the report said that the effect of taking fenugreek seeds could be quite dramatic, when consumed with 1200-1400 calories diet per day. Which is usually recommended for diabetic Patients.

Lettuce belongs to that group of vegetables which contain three per cent or less of carbohydrate. It is , therefore among the important foods which can be prescribed for diabetes. It can be used freely by diabetics.

Soyabean contains a fairly large amount of carbohydrate but there is little or no starch in it. It is , therefore regarded as a very suitable food for diabetic patient. Its carbohydrates produces heat and energy in the body without causing sugar to appear in the urine.

Because of its low carbohydrate contents, it is very good food for diabetic patients and for those who want to reduce their body weight. It is said to be very effective in controlling the percentage of sugar in the urine of diabetic patients.

Experiments have shown that the intake of water extract of Bengal gram enhances the utilization of glucose in both-the diabetic and the normal persons. Tests were conducted and CFTRI Laboratories in Mysore, on a chronic diabetic patient whose insulin requirement was of the order of 40 Units a day when kept on a diet which included liberal supplements of Bengal Gram extract, the conditions of the patient improved considerably and his insulin requirements was reduced to about 20 units per day. Diabetic patients who are on a prescribed diet which does not severely rustics the intake of carbohydrates, but includes liberal amounts of Bengal gram extract, have shown considerable improvements in their fasting blood sugar levels. glucose tolerance, urinary ecretion of sugar and general conditions.

Germinated black gram, taken with half a cupful of fresh bitter gourd juice and a teaspoonful of honey is highly beneficial in the treatment of milder type of diabetes. It should be used once daily for three to four months with restrictions of carbohydrates even in several cases, regular use of this combination, with other precautions, is useful as a health giving food for the prevention of various complications that may arise due to malnutritions in diabetic patients.

Groundnuts are valuable in diabetes. Eating a handful of groundnuts daily by diabetics will not only prevent malnutritions, particularly the deficiency of niacin, but also checks the development of vascular complications.

Fruits are to be eaten and not to be taken as juice

Juice of Bael leaves with ground black pepper is useful in diabetes.

Chewing 4-6 Bael-leaves daily controls sugar.

Taking Black Channa (soaked in milk overnight) eliminates sugar. chapatis of ground gram mixed with ground barley of only besan in lunch and dinner cures diabetes.

Taking carrot juice or carrot juice mixed with karela juice daily in the morning helps in secretion of insulin in the body.

Taking carrot juice with spinach juice (2:1 proportion ) daily also is helpful.

Taking 4-5 gms of Haldi with water or honey twice a day is helpful in curing diabetes.

Juice of Karela 5-10 gms. with or without water taken 3 times a day for 2-3 months-eliminates sugar probles.

3-6 gms. ground Karela (Cut into pieces, dried in shade and then ground) fresh water taken for 2-3 months is useful. In addition to the above-vegetable of Karela is also recommended.

Taking decoction of rind of Neem (40 gms of the rind of Neem to be boiled in 100 gm. water till 30 gm is left strain it) in the morning before breakfast eliminates sugar count in the urine.

Taking raw sliced tomato with salt and pepper sprinkled on it reduces the sugar content in the blood.
